Define Your Why
In a nutshell, what makes you want to blog? The answer might be super simple for some, but, for others, it can be tough. Stop and think. What made you think about blogging in the first place? What was going on in your life, your day, your mind at the time? What sparked that creative spirit and led you to end up here? Take a second and write down the thoughts and feelings that come to mind when you read those questions. You may be looking for a community of like-minded people. Or you might want to earn extra income while teaching others a valuable skill. Others may only want a creative outlet to relieve stress. Those responses will help you answer the rest of these essential questions to ask before beginning a blog.
Define your mission
It's time to create a mission statement for your blog. What's a mission statement? A mission statement is a value-driven statement that describes how you will help others. Yes, I said others. Successful blogging requires a relationship built on the trust-like-and-know factor. Encourage trust by assisting with a defined problem. So, what are you knowledgeable about? What struggles have you faced that others may be facing? How can you relate to an audience in an authentic, meaningful way? Answer these questions, and you're on the right track.
Define your niche
Now that we know your mission, we're well on our way to answering another one of the essential questions to ask before beginning a blog. What will you write about? Well, you've already figured out your skills and talents worth sharing with the world. Odds are, that's the right place. Deciding on a blogging topic is often called "defining your niche". A niche is a specific topic or area of focus that will define your blog. Keep in mind, narrowing down your niche can be hard. After all, we're complex creatures with many interests, talents, and unique qualities. But not all of them belong on your blog.
Define your ideal audience
Knowing who will you write for is another one of the essential questions to ask before blogging. Why? The blog-o-sphere is very crowded these days. It's not enough just to stand out anymore. Modern blogs need to create community. The first step in creating community is building a tribe of like-minded people. Defining an ideal audience can help you narrow your focus, which attracts the right readers to your blog.
Define your goal
Now it's time to ponder another one of the essential questions to ask before beginning a blog. What do you hope to accomplish? Defining your goals can be one of the most important steps in blogging. Is there a particular action you want taken? Are there identifiable milestones to be met? What is your desired outcome? No matter your mission, goals are important.

Define your success measures
Because blogging can sometimes feel like stabbing in the dark, it's important to know how you'll measure success. How will you know if it's working? Remember, you've just defined a goal for your blog. That goal should inform your success measures. If you're blogging to make extra income, then getting a check is a good measure of success. But, if you're blogging to create community, maybe having an engaged Facebook is be a better measure of success.
Define your boundaries
New blogger beware, blogging is hard work. In the beginning, it's fun. You feel energized and ready to take on the world. But after a while, blogging can become a huge responsibility, especially if you're only blogging part-time. It's essential to know your limits. Honestly answer the following question before spending any time or money on blogging. How much time do you have to dedicate to your blog?
